Emily Thornberry For Islington South and Finsbury

Thank you to everyone who has contacted me about the far-right riots that have taken place over the past few weeks.
This racist and Islamophobic violence must be absolutely and unequivocally condemned. Everybody must feel safe on the streets, and I support every effort by the police and courts to bring those involved to swift justice. I stand shoulder to shoulder with local civic and faith leaders in saying that this behaviour will never be tolerated in our community. Thankfully, it seems that the disorder has now dissipated, in no small part as a result of the solidarity expressed by peaceful protesters standing against the far-right.
I will always be proud of our constituency’s diversity, and I am relieved that Islington has not – at the time of writing – experienced any of the disorder seen elsewhere. Islington has a long and proud history of migration and has been shaped by people from various communities for centuries, and we know from experience the impact that far-right extremism can have. We cannot and will not allow it to take hold here.
I am encouraged that many rioters have already appeared in court, and I look forward to seeing those still awaiting trial brought to justice. The government is right to have put additional prosecutors in place to ensure swift justice, because these thugs must face the consequences of their actions.
Politicians have a responsibility to ensure their words do not contribute to a climate where hate can spread in our communities, so I hope those who have whipped up fears and prejudices over the past few years for cynical short-term gain know that their own role in this appalling situation will not be forgiven not forgotten.
Likewise, the role of social media companies in fomenting a climate of hatred continues to concern me, so I am glad the Home Secretary has made clear that those stirring hatred online will be brought to justice just as those who riot in the streets will. I know that the Science and Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle, has also met with tech companies regarding their role in providing a platform for hate, and I will continue to support efforts to ensure these platforms are held to account.
While there are no reports of far-right demonstrations planned in Islington, I am concerned about reports that Muslim communities may continue to be targeted. I have spoken to the Council, who are stepping up police patrols and providing extra support for faith and community meeting places. And I have also spoken to the Home Office, who have made extra rapid security available for mosques. I will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with the government to ensure every member of our community feels safe and protected.
If you see any hate in Islington, please report it by calling 999. And please know that I will always stand up for a society where nobody has to live in fear because of their faith, or because of the colour of their skin.
