I understand that the Government’s proposals for welfare reforms have been a source of uncertainty and anxiety for many. I have been assured that no changes will be made to the eligibility criteria for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) until the Government has concluded a full review of the benefit, which is expected by autumn 2026. Importantly, this review will be genuinely co-produced with disabled people and the organisations that represent them, and it will not set out to make any cuts.

As a proud Labour MP, I believe in a welfare state that is there for all of us when we need it, now and in the future. I believe in a welfare state that protects the most vulnerable and delivers equality and dignity for all. The Government’s new Universal Credit Act will ensure that 200,000 individuals with the most severe disabling conditions are never again called for Universal Credit (UC) reassessments. It will tackle the perverse incentives of our welfare system and benefit millions of households by increasing the standard allowance of Universal Credit above inflation for the first time ever. I hope it is reassuring to know that anyone currently in receipt of the UC health component will have their benefits protected in real terms.

I was elected on a pledge to put the voices of disabled people at the heart of policy. I am glad that the broken Work Capability Assessment will be scrapped.
