Recently, Labour announced our proposals for reforming ministerial severance pay, after the chaos and dysfunction of 2022/23 saw Tory MPs and peers paid a total of £933,086 in severance payments due to the endless churn of ministers.

That is why this month I have spearheaded Labour’s campaign to have those rules changed, to ensure that ministers are never again rewarded for the kind of chaos we witnessed under the Tories in 2022. This week, Labour forced a vote to reform the system, but the Tories used their parliamentary majority to vote it down.

It may be too late to claw that money back, but it was not too late for the Tories to show some sense of accountability and contrition by voting for Labour’s reforms and fixing the system that they have broken.
