Joining local police on a patrol

I am incredibly lucky to have Angel Central, Chapel Market, and Upper Street in my constituency. That’s why I was particularly eager to join police on patrol last week to see what support they are offering local shops and small businesses over the Christmas period and what measures they are taking to supress the rise in retail crime.

Having visited the Cally Co-op recently with USDAW and spoken to shop staff across the constituency who have to deal with retail crime on a daily basis – it is clearer than ever that shop workers need to have greater protection. Many shopkeepers and their staff feel helpless as thieves are becoming increasingly bold and violent, and workers are often forced into uncomfortable and potentially harmful positions. Retail crime is not victimless.

As thieves and criminals are emboldened to take greater liberties, shops need to feel empowered to report incidences of theft and violence by seeing results. As cuts to manpower and funding have impaired investigations and sentencing – we cannot allow shop keepers to feel like they are overlooked and not listened to and for their staff to be in harm’s way while just trying to do their job.

I was impressed by the intelligence gathering and coordination between the Police, the council, and Angel.London team. Gerry, the Business Crime Manager, who is in constant communication with local retail, is a reassuring and knowledgeable presence on the ground. PC Worden, Pearce, Roseje, and Lewis-Stutterby were all consummate and dedicated professionals who all understood the strains on local businesses at this time of year and their role in providing the support shops are asking for.

Businesses, large and small, are what give colour, vitality, and prosperity to our community. During this Christmas period we should all endeavour to engage with our high streets, shop locally, and support physical retail, after what has proved to be several trying years.
