I am proud our Prime Minister has shown real leadership by supporting our Ukrainian allies and I continue to speak up against Russia’s brutal and illegal invasion.

In April 2025, I travelled to Ukraine to meet with members of the Verkhovna Rada and show Britain’s support for our Ukrainian partners. I met with the Deputy Mayor and a group of local residents in Bucha, who recounted the horrors they experienced during Russia’s siege of the region. I was shown the most horrific of images taken on the phones of residents who survived this barbaric assault and met young British lawyers paid for by the Government who are documenting what happens for a future ICC hearing. You can read the full report of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee’s trip here. 

The FAC has had many meetings with Ukrainian politicians both online and face to face. One of the most memorable was in February 2026, when the Committee and I met virtually with Vitali Klitschko, the Mayor of Kyiv, to hear first-hand about the awful conditions facing Ukrainian civilians. He described the relentless Russian attacks on energy infrastructure that have left residents of the city with only a few hours of electricity each day. Mayor Klitschko shared with the Committee a heartbreaking account of awarding a medal for the second time to a Ukrainian mother who told him he would not see her again because the war had now taken both her sons. 

We must stand steadfast with Ukraine throughout this conflict, continuing to supply vital financial and military support, and ensure the Ukrainians are able to secure peace on their terms, with their consent. The Ukrainians I have met are incredibly grateful for our help and know that the British are their friends.
