Burst water main - February 2026

Thames Water has been failing the people of Islington South and Finsbury for far too long. I can assure you that the Government will always act in the interests of customers and the environment. It is important we ensure that Thames Water does this too. Following the flood to Caledonian Road on 24 February 2026, I wrote the attached letter to the Chief Executive of Thames Water.

I hope it is reassuring to know that the Government is working closely with Ofwat as the future of the company is considered. Ofwat will only agree a plan with creditors if it will ensure the best possible outcomes for customers and the environment.

Should Thames Water become insolvent, I know Ministers would not hesitate to apply to place the company into a special administration regime to ensure no increased disruption to supply to customers. This is not a low-cost option, but the Government is engaged in this contingency planning. However, we have not reached the circumstances in which such a regime could be implemented.
