Dear Friends,

It’s not just our trade with the European Union that is at risk if we don’t get a deal in place by December 31st; it’s also our trade with 15 other countries around the world – including Canada, Turkey, Singapore, Mexico, Vietnam and Ghana – where we need to take our existing EU trade deals with those countries, and convert them into new bilateral agreements for the UK alone.

Just like the EU deal, we’re running out of time to get those deals done, and on Wednesday, the deadline passed for the government to finalise these agreements and publish them before Parliament so the process of ratification can be completed before the end of the year. It’s total incompetence from the government, and I’ve written to Liz Truss twice this week to ask her about it.

First, I wrote to her on Tuesday alerting her to the deadline, a letter you can read here. And this evening, after she failed to take action, I’ve written to her again asking what she plans to do now the deadline has been missed. You can read that letter below.

It feels like in every area of government at the moment, the Labour Party is having to run after Ministers like Liz Truss telling them what they should be doing, and asking why they aren’t. It’s exhausting but also depressing when the simple answer is they’re just incompetent at their jobs, and the whole country is suffering as a result. But we’ve got to keep at it, because until we can get a Labour government in power, it’s the only way to get things done.

As always, let me have your thoughts.

Best wishes,
Emily
