The threat to Islington Wine came after the recent closure of the nearby butchers on Liverpool Road.

Emily had written to the Planning Department objecting to the plans calling shops like this the ‘lifeblood of our community’. Barnsbury Councillor James Murray had also spoken up with his concerns – having visited Mr McDaniel.  The decision followed a petition signed by 300 local residents who opposed the plans to sell the site on Liverpool Road to developers, which would have forced this shop to close.

When reaching its decision the Planning Committee said that it ‘Would be harmful to the local community and to the character and appearance of the Barnsbury Conservation Area’. Following the petition and Emily’s intervention the Council’s Planning Committee has thrown out the plans.

Owner Des McDaniel who has been described as a ‘pillar of the community’ was relieved that his business, which has served the community for twenty-three years has now been saved.

On hearing about the Planning Committee’s decision Emily said:

‘I am pleased that together we were able to make sure the strong views of residents were considered when the Council made this decision’.

Emily Thornberry and Councillor Murray visited the owner Des McDaniel following this decision, to congratulate him on news.
