Emily Thornberry MP is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Parliamentary Intern to join her Westminster office.

Length of internship: 6 months
Time commitment: 3 days per week
Salary: London Living Wage

This is an exciting opportunity to learn more about what goes into running the office of a busy MP, as you support Emily in her roles as the MP for Islington South and Finsbury, and as Shadow Attorney General.

The successful applicant will be highly organised, adept at working in a fast-paced environment, and able to work independently and proactively to ensure Emily can deliver her important responsibilities effectively.

Knowledge of Islington South and Finsbury is desirable.

Duties

  • Support Emily’s parliamentary team, including the Parliamentary Assistant and Parliamentary Office Manager, to undertake their responsibilities managing Emily’s diary, parliamentary and constituency activities, and running the office.
  • Undertake a wide range of office administrative tasks, from filing and photocopying to research and data entry.
  • Support Emily to participate in meetings and events, as required.
  • Liaise with a broad range of constituency and parliamentary stakeholders, both on the phone and in person.
  • Proactively lead on individual projects and activities with minimal supervision.
  • Organise travel and accompany Emily to events, including potentially outside of London.
  • Undertake other duties as required

The role will involve some working outside of normal working hours and may involve some national travel.


Skills, experience, and qualities:

  • Excellent organisation skills and attention to detail.
  • Superb written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the legislative and political system of the UK, as well as an understanding of party politics.
  • Ability to deal with constituents and other stakeholders in a compassionate, understanding, and sensitive manner.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks effectively, and to work well and keep calm under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Strong team-player, who is able to work well with others and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Politically sensitive and able to work with tact and discretion.
  • Sympathetic to the aims and values of the Labour Party.
