Job Description & Person Specification – Caseworker, Dame Emily Thornberry MP

After more than two years, I’m losing a dedicated Caseworker who is leaving to qualify as a lawyer. I am therefore looking to replace them with a full-time Caseworker with relevant experience to join my well-regarded and established team.

The role will be based in my constituency office in Islington, working one day a week from my Parliamentary office.

 

Job Title: Caseworker

Working For: Dame Emily Thornberry MP (Islington South and Finsbury)

Location: London

Salary: £28,800 – £32,000, dependent on experience

Hours: Full Time (37.5 hours per week)

Length of Contract: Permanent

Interview dates: W/C 29th June 2026

Start Date: Monday 3rd August 2026

 

Person specification:

Essential:

  • Ability to deal with and prioritise a large and varied workload and work well under pressure
  • Ability to manage people’s expectations in challenging circumstances.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Good IT skills including MS Office.
  • Ability to draft letters and emails to a high professional standard.
  • Motivation to work proactively and independently, as well as part of a small, collaborative team.
  • Commitment to the aims and values of the Labour Party.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience working as a Caseworker for a Member of Parliament or experience of casework in a similar role.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Analyse patterns of enquiries and highlight political themes and issues that arise in the constituency.
  • Assist surgeries and other meetings and follow up as appropriate.
  • Attend constituency meetings as appropriate.
  • Deal with large numbers of standard queries, as well as assisting on more complex cases from members of the public by phone, email, social media or face to face.
  • Ensure that each case is dealt with promptly, sensitively, confidentially and accurately.
  • Gather relevant information to assist with resolving cases.
  • Log all cases; monitor progress and ensure all identified actions are taken.
  • Retain records and information confidentially and in line with the Data Protection Act.
  • There will be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of the normal working hours and travel for work occasionally.
  • Occasional project-based work to support constituents.
  • Maintain security protocols of the office.
