Westminster Hall Speech on RSPCA Private Prosecutions

Emily Thornberry (Islington South and Finsbury) (Lab):

It is a pleasure, Mr Williams, to serve under your chairmanship. Many Tory MPs in this debate seem to be disappointed that their coalition Government have decided not to change the law on hunting, or to make it legal, and it seems that there will not even be a free vote. Their fury has been turned on another organisation, and it seems that the RSPCA’s prosecution of the Heythrop hunt has put its head above the parapet, so it is now in the firing line.

Emily Puts Pressure on UKBA to Finally Resolve Asylum Backlog

22 November 2012

Dear Mr Whiteman

Re: Asylum Legacy backlog

Thank you for your letter of 15/11/12 about the workload of CAAU processing asylum legacy casework. I was concerned to see that there were still 25,500 cases with CAAU at 30/06/12, and you were expecting to add 16,000 cases from the controlled archive before this is closed next month, making a total of 41,500 cases.

Response to the Government's proposed Badger cull

Thank you for contacting me about the culling of badgers. A number of constituents have raised concerns about this, and at the House of Commons recently I was pleasantly surprised to meet a constituent with detailed knowledge of both epidemiology and dairy farming – he was quite clear that culling badgers was not a good idea.

24 October 2012

Dear Karen

Thank you for taking the time to meet with me earlier this week to discuss the consultation on changes to Islington’s Housing Allocation Scheme. The localism agenda provides an opportunity for Local Authorities to review the way they deal with housing need, and the obvious concern is that many Councils will use this opportunity to further restrict access to suitable affordable housing for those in need.
