Last week I, along with Catherine West, local councillors, fire-fighters and concerned residents of Islington, attempted to deliver a 3000 signature petition to Boris Johnson, Conservative Mayor of London, as he proposed his budget. The petition, which thousands of you signed, called on him to stop the closure of Clerkenwell Fire Station.Read more
I was honoured to speak at the Defend the Whittington meeting last Tuesday in an overflowing hall, joined by over 500 concerned residents from across Islington, Camden and Haringey.
I strongly support civil marriage. People who love each other and want to make a long term commitment should be able to get married, irrespective of their gender. As a society we should support and celebrate their love and commitment. There should be no hierarchy when it comes to love. I was proud to be a founding member of the Labour campaign for equal marriage.
Sunday January 27th marked the 68th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and extermination camp which is the site of the largest mass murder in history. In the weeks running up to the day, the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET) placed a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons, giving MPs the chance to honour those who were savagely persecuted and killed during the Holocaust and encouraging constituents to work together to combat prejudice and racism in society today.
