Plans submitted to Islington Council this month have alarmed Emily by showing that less than a third of the 304 proposed homes will be affordable – far short of the 50% target which Labour politicians in the borough have been pushing.
Furthermore, just 8 of these affordable flats will be family-sized homes.
Family-sized homes, with 3 or more bedrooms, are desperately needed to help tackle Islington’s 13,000-strong housing waiting list. Many of those in greatest need are families living in small flats in severe overcrowding.
Emily said:
“I have seen no evidence that the council has pushed the developer for more affordable or family-sized homes in this scheme. Around City Road and across Islington there are families living in desperate overcrowding and they need the council to make sure new homes in the borough can help them. For 10 years this council has been letting developers off the hook, and letting down families in need.”
