Apology from Islington Liberal Democrats

11 November 2009, 4:14pm

In November 2009, Islington's Lib Dems agreed to pay Emily Thornberry a four-figure sum and publish an apology for publishing untrue allegations about her.

The text of the Lib Dems' apology is:

"On our Islington Local Party /London Region websites in July 2009 we published a story that alleged that Emily Thornberry MP, was the 9th worst attendee at committee meetings in the House of Commons, and that she had voted against the publication of MPs expenses. We now accept that these allegations are incorrect.

"The attendance record allegation was based on a partial sample of MPs. We accept it was neither a true or correct comparative record of Ms Thornberry's attendance at committee meetings.

"Although Ms Thornberry had voted against a Liberal Democrat motion in favour of the transparency of MP's expenses, she had voted for an alternative motion in favour of full transparency, which she has always supported. We accept she has not sought to hide her expenses claims.

"We apologise for any embarrassment caused to her."
