The influential Fabian Review's "Environment Special" has featured a call by Islington MP Emily Thornberry to use traditional Labour values in the fight against climate change. Fellow contributors to the publication included Environment Secretary David Miliband, former Environment Minister Michael Meacher and Cabinet Minster Peter Hain.
In her article Emily argued that only Labour's values of collectivism, internationalism and radicalism could deal with the threat of Climate Change. Emily said that collective action is needed to stop climate change and so the Conservative approach of free market economics would not work.
Emily wrote:
"Only a Labour Government can rise to the challenge of climate change. Only a party with the values of collectivism, internationalism and radicalism...The Tories offer no alternative. Despite their mood music they don't dare commit themselves to anything other than more free market economic"
Emily argued for policy changes such as supporting more cycling and public transport, along with increases in road tax for the most polluting cars. Emily also said more should be done to force energy companies to help customers save energy and that private landlords should be required to make properties more energy efficient.
Fabian Review is produced by the Fabian Society, which was founded in 1884 by Beatrice and Sidney Webb, George Bernard Shaw and HG Wells. The Fabian Society is a socialist society which is affiliated to the Labour Party.
