"Government awards City Basin £2 million"

20 February 2006, 8:00pm

Regeneration money welcomed by Emily

Emily Thornberry MP has welcomed an announcement by the government that £2 million is to be given to Islington's City Road Basin project to develop more public space.

Emily said:

‘This sum of money is a large government subsidy to what I hope will be a successful regeneration of the basin. In order for it to work British Waterways, Islington Council, the government and the community need to work together.

This is a major subsidy from the government and this huge regeneration scheme in the middle of Islington would not be possible without it.'

Almost £300m has been awarded to over 85 schemes by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM). The investment follows the Government's response to the Barker Review of housing supply last year that outlined Government plans to help future generations of home buyers get a foot on the housing ladder.

The money allocated through the Community Infrastructure Fund, which is a joint initiative between ODPM and Department for Transport, demonstrates the cross-government pledge to meet the country's housing needs in a sustainable way.
