Emily Thornberry has visited the newly refurbished Caledonian Road tube station to inspect the improvement works at the station, which include an extra 41 CCTV cameras.
Emily visited the station along with Labour GLA Member Jennette Arnold and recently-elected local Labour councillors Barry Edwards and Rupert Perry.
Emily was pleased that the station upgrade had focused on improving security by installing better lighting and more CCTV. The total number of CCTVs at the station is now 68.
Emily said:
"I am glad that London Underground has been making Caledonian Road station safer - there's now more CCTV at this one tube station than the council has installed in the whole of Islington!"
Emily has been working with fellow Labour MPs and the Mayor of London to make sure that safety is also improved on the North London Line, which runs across Islington. Barnsbury and Caledonian station on the North London Line, which is near to Caledonian Road tube station, is unstaffed on weekday evenings and all weekend.
Emily and local Labour councillors have been collecting signatures for a petition urging the government to ensure that all overland rail stations are properly staffed during the whole of their hours of operation after dark. The Labour Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, has promised more police on the line when he takes control of it next year.
