Emily Thornberry has heard school children at St Mary Magdalene's School in Islington telling the Government to make sure our seas and marine life are preserved - and to make sure they'll still be able to eat fish and chips in the future.
Emily has been visiting Islington's primary schools in recent months to speak to pupils about the proposed Marine Bill - a bill that would protect the seas around Britain from activities like over-fishing and dredging. Emily has encouraged pupils who want to protect our seas and marine life to write to Environment Minister David Miliband MP to encourage him to get the Bill brought before Parliament.
Emily visited St Mary Magdalene's School in September to talk to one class about the Bill, and then went back in October to see the class present their arguments to the whole school at assembly. One student told her fellow pupils how dredging doesn't just kill fish but it destroys their homes too, whilst another challenged the assembly: "Do you want to go into a fish'n'chip shop and only get chips?!"

"I wanted to make sure our inner-city kids had to chance to show the Government that even though we live miles from the sea, they still care deeply about protecting our seas and marine life. The kids' presentations were fantastic - I said I hoped to be an MP in Islington for 20 years, and so there would be a vacancy at just the right time for one of them to take over!"
