Emily launches 'Open Access' project.

Older people from ethnic minorities must not be excluded from Islington's services - Emily Thornberry, MP for Islington South and Finsbury, has said as she launched a new Government-funded project to tackle the problem.

Emily launched the project, ‘Open Access', which will be run by Age Concern Islington, at the London Voluntary Sector Resource Centre on Holloway Road this week.

Speaking to an audience of elderly Islington residents from ethnic minorities, Emily said:

"A lot of older people are not aware of all the services out there that they can use - and this problem is especially bad for people with English as a second language. In my first year as MP, I helped people from 44 different countries, so if we can make services accessible for them, they'll be easier for everyone to find out about."

The project will aim to tackle the barriers that prevent older people from ethnic minorities from making use of local services, for example Islington's health and leisure courses. By making access easier for people who face the greatest barriers, the project hopes to make services more accessible for all older people.
